How to get your home ready for Christmas

This is a year like no other, and because many of us are stuck at home, there is all the more reason to make our homes glitter, glimmer and glow – inside and out. There may not be the usual crowds of family and friends and we can’t do the things we usually do out and about, but we can make our Christmas decorations Instagram and Zoom worthy. More importantly, wonderful for us and our families.

Decorating the outside of your home is a must this year.  Statement wreaths with integrated lights on the front door, mini Christmas trees on either side and more twinkling lights threaded through trees, hedges and flowerpots. Create Christmas scenes on your windowsills with foliage, sparkling ornaments and fairy lights or candles. Imagine how much joy this will bring to passers-by and neighbours.

The entrance hall is where we welcome ourselves every time we arrive home, so make it gorgeous to create a sense of joy whenever you open the door. If you have strong colour themes in your home, use them as the base for your decorations.

For example in this beautiful show home at The Beacons in Houlton, there is a striking blue wall paper in the sitting room and tones of blue throughout the reception areas, so we incorporated these colours in our ornaments as well as bringing in warmer complimentary colours, natural textures, bowls of homemade goodies and the essential golds and silvers to create a feeling of luxury and glamour.

Use natural, recyclable decorations such as fresh and dried foliage, berries, spices and fruits, glass baubles and handmade tree ornaments. Don’t forget the Christmas stockings and the fragrance of Christmas. If you have a real tree keep it well watered so it produces that special scent and add to it with spicy fragranced candles.

The festive table may be small this year, but it will definitely look good enough to eat. Follow the colour theme through with fresh flowers, candles and, for instance, personalised place markers such as glass baubles with family names written in gold or silver. Create beautiful place settings with table napkins to match you colour theme tied together with dried fruit, foliage and ribbon.

Decorate every room in the house with fragrant flowers, mistletoe, twinkling lights and mini trees. Make this Christmas one to remember for all the right reasons.

If you are lucky enough to be moving into a brand new, beautifully designed Morris Home, you will have the perfect backdrop to create new traditions and make memories to last a lifetime.
